Koestler Arts is proud to announce that their fifteenth Annual UK Exhibition in partnership with the Southbank Centre this October will be curated by Chinese contemporary artist, documentarian, and activist, Ai Weiwei. 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the Koestler Awards and Ai Weiwei wants this landmark exhibition to be ‘the most ambitious yet’.

The vision for the exhibition is inspired by the artist’s visit to the Koestler Arts building, which currently holds over 6,500 artworks entered into this year’s Awards. Taken aback by the quantity of artworks and the range of categories on display, Ai Weiwei’s concept evolved; to be as inclusive as possible and to let the artwork show how humanity responds when put in extreme circumstances.

This year, the exhibition space at the Southbank Centre will be transformed physically to realise this vision, which will help to preserve the environment within which the artworks are made. The aim is to not ‘translate’ the work but to retain the wholeness of it. Ai Weiwei explained this idea with an analogy: he wants to present the forest, not just a branch that comes from it.

During his curation period, the artist also visited HM Prison Wormwood Scrubs, which is situated next to the Koestler Arts Centre. Having visited many prisons around the world, as well as experiencing his own restriction of freedom during a period of secret detention and constant surveillance in China, this additional visit to HMP Wormwood Scrubs helped to strengthen and confirm the vision for the exhibition.

Despite the severe knock-on effects that Covid has had on prisons, which are only now beginning to return to ‘normal’, nearly 3,000 artists have worked to create artwork for this year’s Koestler Awards. These figures reinforce the motivation behind this year’s exhibition.

Mirroring Koestler Arts’ philosophy, Ai Weiwei wrote, “expressing oneself is a part of being human. To be deprived of a voice is to be told you are not a participant in society; ultimately it is a denial of humanity”.

The name Pattie Boyd is synonymous with sixties counter-culture, from fashion to music to spirituality. How Black culture reinvented and subverted the Ivy Look

From the most avant-garde jazz musicians, visual artists and poets to architects, philosophers and writers, Black Ivy: A Revolt in Style charts a period in American history when Black men across the country adopted the clothing of a privileged elite and made it their own. David Bailey exhibits images from his illustrious archive for the first time at Photo London in September. Bailey has selected some of his most recognisable portraits alongside beautiful work from his 80s fashion archive. Rarely seen images of Jean Shrimpton (David Hockney Face Paint) from 1963 and a playful portrait of Miles Davis from 1969, will be shown alongside incredible fashion images featuring Catherine Bailey, Jerry Hall and Helmut Newton.

Bailey has personally selected the series of photographs which also includes some of his most high-profile black and white portraits including Andy Warhol, John Lennon & Paul McCartney and Michael Caine.

Bailey’s work with the Rolling Stones will also feature, including his famed black and white portrait of Mick Jagger, the colour image of Jagger taken by Bailey for the Goat’s Head Soup cover and a vibrant 1968 portrait of the band together.

A unique series of Polaroids will also be available at the booth, featuring a selection of 100 priced at £1000 each, taken on jobs throughout Bailey’s remarkable career. This is the first time the photographer has hosted a booth at the fair, his previous involvement being a take-over of the Taschen stand for the launch of his SUMO book in 2019. The artists have created installations that will serve as temporary landmarks connecting eight areas in the RBKC, including: Sloane Square, Duke of York Square, Kings Road, Chelsea Theatre, Holland Park, Freston Road, Portobello, High Street Kensington and White City.

KCAW2020 hosted an Open Call to artists to give greater visibility to locally based creative talent. These landmark installations proposed by the artists will be placed in a variety of public spaces to form an evolving discovery trail that can be explored on foot and digitally across all KCAW platforms, including self-guided tours on the Go Jauntly app.

“They were wonderful to work with … and very comfortable around me.”

By the start of 1966, The Rolling Stones’ position as rock gods was established. They were making serious money and splashing out on new homes and cars. Their official photographer and friend, Gered Mankowitz, was invited to shoot an “At Home” session with each member of the band. “They hated the idea of unknown photographers visiting their private sanctuaries … If I did it then the press office would have a large selection of this type of image and could fulfil any magazine request without having to bother the band.”

Mankowitz kept these photographs in supermarket carrier bags stashed under his desk for several years, “getting in my way and frequently wondering why I continued to hold on to them”. This is the first time his “At Home” sessions have been collated and published. The book includes iconic and unseen photographs: Mick in a kipper tie turning on his new “They were wonderful to work with … and very comfortable around me.” television and posing outside with a new Aston Martin; Keith, Lord of the Manor-style, with his blue Bentley and antique sword at his East Sussex home; Charlie grinning next to lingerie drying in the garden; Brian in obligatory silk shirt in front of a hand-painted mural; Bill in the kitchen with his dog. The photographs are relaxed, the band’s ease with Mankowitz evident. There are moments of contemplation, intimacy and wit, and Mankowitz manages to capture something of an amused innocence to the whole concept, as if the five of them can’t quite believe how far they have come. Goin’ Home With the Rolling Stones ’66 is a beguiling collection of images, shot with incredible skill, that offers that rare gem in Stones photography – a fresh perspective.

By the time Gered Mankowitz received the call asking him to photograph the Stones he had already established a name for himself as one of the most interesting and mould-breaking photographers in the music industry. Only 18 when he first started working with the band, Mankowitz brought a youthful, gritty approach to his photographs. This coarse freshness led to his photographs being used on a number of their album covers, including Out Of Our Heads (December’s Children in the US) and Between The Buttons. He also photographed them extensively on their tour of America in 1965. “At the end of ’65 we had got to know each other pretty well and I felt very at home with them all.” Mankowitz was The Rolling Stones official photographer from 1965 to 1967. He went on to work with the most well-known names in the business, including Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Kate Bush, Duran Duran, and Oasis. He is still working in the industry 50 years later, venerated as one of the best music photographers of his generation. His work has been exhibited worldwide and in 2016 he was awarded an honorary Fellowship to The Royal Photographic Society.

Art on a Postcard (AOAP) will return with its annual Winter Auction this November in partnership with Dreweatts Auction House to raise funds for the Hepatitis C Trust helpline. Since the global pandemic, many changes have been made to the way artwork is made and viewed. In light of this, AOAP have teamed up with art exhibition platform gowithYamo to present an online interactive show. The Winter Auction is no longer anonymous, providing an opportunity to discover in-depth the background and practices of the artists taking part, and, to accompany this year's auction there will be a full programme of podcasts, artists talks and an opportunity to discover the emerging talent that AOAP are so proud to highlight.

There are 230 artists are participating this year, with highlights including: renowned Paraguayan artist Faith Wilding, known for her feminist performances and installations in the 70s, Dutch polemical artist Erik van Lieshout, British Anj Smith whose intricately rendered paintings explore issues of identity, eroticism, mortality, and fragility; critically acclaimed British artist Ryan Mosely who has recently taken part in the group show Radical Figures, Painting in the New Millennium at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, and Saint Lucian born artist Winston Branch whose accolades include a Guggenheim fellowship and work held in the collections of many of the world’s top galleries including The Tate, Guggenheim, V&A and many more.

The Winter Auction will focus on raising funds for the Hepatitis C Trust helpline, staffed entirely by people who have had hepatitis C. The helpline has become a key component to the Infected Blood Inquiry, an investigation launched to discover why infected blood products were being used to treat NHS patients prior 1992. Helpline manager Samantha May is compiling supporting evidence for the Inquiry based on statistics and commonalties received from calls made to the helpline. Calls made by patients who have received infected blood during transfusion, that has led to misdiagnosis and subsequently the discovery they have cirrhosis or liver cancer, is on the rise. Keeping up with these calls is now the first priority for the Trust.

In the coming months we expect to be inundated with calls as the Infected Blood Inquiry is set to be the largest Inquiry this country has seen and will certainly shine a light the thousands of people who’ve either lost their lives or had them incontrovertibly impaired. “We, he and I, two Americans. We meet silently and part silently. Between us, impregnable and as deadly as the wall behind him, is another wall. It is there on the trolley tracks, it crawls along the cobble stones, across frontiers and oceans, reaching back home, back into our lives and deep into our hearts: dividing us, whenever we meet. I am white and he is Black.“

A fresh and expanded edition, Black in White America, 1963-1965 is the definitive collection of Leonard Freed’s seminal and timely Civil Rights photo essay first published in 1968. It is published in full collaboration with the Freed Estate and a foreword from fellow Magnum photographer, Eli Reed.

In 1962, white photojournalist Leonard Freed was on assignment in Berlin. He photographed an African-American soldier standing in front of the wall. The irony of this soldier defending the USA on foreign soil while African-Americans at home were fighting for their civil rights resonated with Freed.

On his return to the States in 1963 he photographed the March on Washington and began a journey across the United States to document black communities in the North and South. From 1963 to 1965, he captured the plight of African Americans; the great struggle for racial equality within a deeply segregated, racist society.

This extraordinary collection of images – including Martin Luther King, Jr. greeting an eager crowd in an open-topped car, incarcerated black men in the Deep South and families living defiantly ordinary lives – conveys with power and dignity the exhausting, endless struggle of being black in white America.

The photographs in this newly designed edition have been reproduced from the original negatives and using vintage prints created by Freed’s master printer and widow, Brigitte Freed, as reference. Working closely with the archive, Freed’s Black in White America series has never been published in such quality and detail before, and many images are also being published for the first time. The photographs in this large format edition are accompanied by text from Freed’s original diaries from the time.

Leonard Freed (1929-2006) was an acclaimed American documentary photojournalist and member of Magnum Photos. Born and raised in working-class Brooklyn, New York, Freed rose to prominence for his portrayal of societal and racial injustices, particularly in relation to the black community during the American civil rights movement in the 1960s. He is also renowned for his photo essays on the Jewish community in Amsterdam and Germany, the Yom Kippur War, Asian immigration in England, North Sea oil development, Spain after Franco and his essays on the New York police department in the 1970s, among others. His photographs are held in the permanent collections of major art institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum Folkwang, and the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Ronnie Wood will collaborate with country estate and stately home Ashridge House on a unique summer exhibition this August.

Ronnie Wood x Ashridge House will see Ronnie present a considerable collection of original artworks including some of his most treasured paintings, a series of sculptures and a selection of etchings within the extraordinary interiors of Ashridge House. Many of the works are previously unseen and the exhibition will also include new pieces that he has produced during lockdown. There will be a room dedicated to Ronnie’s paintings of Ashridge House and its spectacular grounds. Other highlights will include many of Ronnie’s favourite paintings, hand-picked for the Ashridge collaboration, plus a remarkable new large-scale tapestry of Ronnie’s original painting interpreting the iconic Beggar’s Banquet album that will hang in the imposing entrance of Ashridge House.

“I’ve long been inspired by the beauty of Ashridge House and its incredible gardens” says Ronnie. "I’ve passed by it many times and have always been intrigued by what it’s like inside and the story of the place. I’ve recreated Ashridge in many of my paintings over the years, so to finally go inside and explore such a historic and fascinating place and have the opportunity to show my work there is a really special moment. I hope visitors will come in August and enjoy the art in these breath-taking surroundings."

Set in 190 acres of private gardens in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, Ashridge House is steeped in British history dating back to 1283 when Ashridge was first established as a monastery for the order of the ‘College of Bonhommes’ founded by Edmund, Earl of Cornwall. In 1539, with the dissolution of the monasteries, King Henry VIII acquired Ashridge as a country residence later bequeathing it to his daughter and future Queen, Elizabeth I in 1550. Following Elizabeth’s death in 1603 Ashridge was purchased by Sir Thomas Egerton (Queen Elizabeth I’s Lord Keeper) in 1604 and Ashridge became home to the Dukes and Earls of Bridgewater who continued to live there for 245 years through to the end of the First World War. In 1808 Ashridge was almost completely rebuilt by James Wyatt in the spectacular style you see today.

Ashridge House is rarely open to the public and the week-long exhibition will give visitors a chance to enjoy Ronnie’s art while exploring the beautiful, historic house as well as its idyllic grounds. Ronnie Wood x Ashridge House will open to the public 22-27 August from 10am-4pm. Timed, socially-distanced slots will be available to pre-book via the Ashridge House website and will include access to the gardens. Tickets cost £10 each + £1.37 booking fee and all ticket proceeds will be donated to the NHS.

Ronnie’s artwork is widely collected throughout the world and over the years, the artist and the musician have become inseparable. As his musical career progressed, Ronnie continued his passion for painting and drawing; his subjects ranging from band members and musicians he admired, knew and sometimes played with, to family and close friends as well as stunning landscapes such as the magnificent Ashridge estate.

Reel Art Press is excited to announce the publication of Godlis Streets (November 2020) – the first book dedicated to the 1970s and ’80s street photography of celebrated photographer David Godlis. With a foreword by critic Luc Sante, and an afterword by Blondie co-founder and guitarist Chris Stein, Godlis Streets is a fascinating collection of photographs that represent the artist’s focus: “It was the streets I wanted to conquer. Lisette Model said: ‘photography is the art of the split second’. So I taught myself to be fast. To ‘zone focus’ with my 35mm wide angle lens. No high art aims. Just street photographs.”

Godlis is perhaps most celebrated for his grainy black and white images of the famous CBGB’s punk scene made up of the Ramones, Patti Smith, Blondie, Television, Richard Hell and Talking Heads. For over 40 years, his practice has also consisted of walking around the streets of first Boston and later New York City and shooting whatever catches his eye. Heavily influenced by Brassai’s immersive reportage of 1930s Paris, and inspired by Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Gary Winogrand, and Lee Friedlander, whom he quotes:

"‘You don’t have to go looking for pictures. You go out and the pictures are staring at you’. He sure was right about that,” Godlis was enamoured with street photography, adopting an approach to the art that is instinctual and immediate, shooting scenes and subjects with long handheld Leica exposures and using only natural light.

Following the suicide of Diane Arbus in 1972, MoMA held a retrospective of her work that moved Godlis to continue to shoot what he saw in the moment, enabling the mystery behind each image to speak for itself.

From nuns walking past crude advertisements and signs donning ‘the end is nigh’, a woman tanning herself with solar panels next to a fountain, commuters en route to the nearest subway station and midnight diner patrons, Godlis never misses a beat. In capturing the rebellion, mundanity and humour through subtle observations across cultures and generations – in cafes and bars, on streets and porches – Godlis depicts the city in the midst of change, on the edge of something new, inadvertently documenting its evolution from grit to glamour.

Godlis has exhibited all over the world. Born in 1951, and beginning his career at the age of 19, he is one of the most important street photographers of a generation. Since the late eighties he has been photographer for Film at Lincoln Center, and for the last 25 years has covered the New York Film Festival.

Reel Art Press presents the official book commemorating the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. Written by the festival’s co-creator and co-founder Michael Lang, this large coffee table edition provides exclusive insight into the magic that made up “three days of peace and music.”

What started as a gathering for the counter-culture would become the most important and influential music festival in history, attended by over half a million people who gathered at a dairy farm in the Catskills for the three-day festival from 15-18 August 1969. Renowned Magnum photographer Werner Bischof brought early 1950s America vividly to life through his series of enigmatic and expansively composed images, yet his tragic death at the age of 38 meant that this work was never printed in his lifetime. A true innovator, Bischof was one of the first documentary photographers to approach colour seriously. At the time most of his celebrated contemporaries were still predominantly working in monochrome and would continue to do so until the mid 1960s. Now this fascinating collection of both black and white and colour images, taken during his travels around America, many shown here for the first time, will be unveiled in a landmark exhibition that celebrates the legendary photographer’s work.

Werner Bischof is recognised as one of history’s most influential photographers. During his lifetime he received international recognition for his outstanding and innovative photography and became the first non-founder to be inducted into the fledgling Magnum collective in 1949, joining Robert Capa, David ‘Chim’ Seymour, Henri Cartier-Bresson and George Rodger. Sought-after by the world’s leading international newspapers and magazines, Bischof’s ground-breaking photographs informed many of the greats that were to follow. Hailed for his pioneering early colour photography and sensitive, humanitarian reportage style, by the time Bischof’s life was tragically cut short in 1954, he had already produced an important body of work, despite having been a professional photographer for only nine years.

Featuring 25 photographs, this experimentation with colour and movement interweaves the tender intimacies of daily life with striking street scenes. Cars blur past lone, shadowy figures, rain splatters the sidewalks, the multicoloured lights of Broadway glimmer in a vivid haze. This is a booming and optimistic America documented with warmth and empathy through the post-war eyes of Swiss-born photographer and photojournalist, Werner Bischof.

Writing in his diary in 1953, Bischof’s first impression of life in New York City was of a ‘mechanized’ and ‘numb’ existence, adding: “now I realise what Chaplin's 'Modern Times' was really about.” The isolation he felt as an outsider clearly impacted his photographs; very few people are the focal point. Instead, the images evoke anonymity, stolen moments taken through shop windows or from high-up vantage points; under bridges and on buses. Remarkable geometric streetscapes starkly contrast with evocative, personal scenes. The result is a contemplative look at everyday life in America during a period that signaled immense change, as well as austerity and upheaval.

Travelling after the Second World War, Bischof reached the United States in 1953 – given free passage for acting as the ship’s photographer - and stayed for only one year. ‘USA’ is a compelling chronicle of that time; a landmark study of the beauty of ordinary people, the streets they walked and the shops they frequented, as well as an honest look at the colorful and nuanced landscape that fashioned post-war America. These remarkable images are exhibited together for the very first time by the David Hill Gallery in London.

Sanlé Sory’s ‘Peuple de la Nuit’ portraits capture the vibrant youth culture, dance parties and flourishing music scene of his home city, a Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, West Africa. This expansive collection of images, taken between the years 1960-1985 will be unveiled for the first time in a stunning exhibition and book.

Recently unearthed from Sory’s personal archive, ‘Peuple de la Nuit’ is an evocative tribute to the nightlife of a distant era. This collection of black-and-white photographs the carefree spirit of Sanlé’s subjects, including the musicians, dancers and lovers that graced some of Bobo’s hippest venues - Volta Dancing, Calebasse d’Or, Normandie and Dafra Bar.

Eager to portray the region’s unique energy and passion, Sory would set off towards the remote villages along the Kou Valley, north West of Bobo. Driving in his Volta Photo Citroen 2CV van carrying a few lights and a home-made sound system, Sanlé would stage his own Bals Poussière (dustball parties) which often lasted until well after sunrise – at which point the farmers and herders would head straight back to tend their fields and cattle.

Exhibited for the first time at the David Hill Gallery in London and coinciding with a book of the same name published by Stanley / Barker, ‘Peuple de Nuit’ is a fascinating portrait of youth culture and the enigmatic night-time scene during the first decades of African independence.

Sergio Leone’s film Once Upon a Time in the West set out to be the ultimate Western – a celebration of the power of classic Hollywood cinema, a meditation on the making of America, and a lament for the decline of one of the most cherished film genres in the form of a “dance of death”. With this film, Leone said a fond farewell to the noisy and flamboyant world of the Italian Western, which he had created with A Fistful of Dollars and sequels (1964-6), and aimed for something much more ambitious – an exploration of the relationship between myth (“Once Upon a Time...”), history (“...in the West”) and his own autobiography as an avid film-goer.

With Once Upon a Time in the West, several of Leone’s dreams came true: to work with Henry Fonda – a hero of his youth in suburban Rome – to make a star of Charles Bronson as he had of Clint Eastwood, to integrate musical score and visual image by recording the music in advance of filming, to re-boot some of the most hallowed moments of Hollywood Westerns, and to shoot among the buttes and mesas of Monument Valley, John Ford territory. This would be a horse opera in which the arias aren’t sung, they are stared.

Once Upon a Time has since inspired several generations of filmmakers worldwide. Its combination of “film about film” with an angry historical epic, told with great style, has resonated for half a century, and its reputation has steadily grown. Released this November Art Kane:Harlem 1958 marks the 60th anniversary of one of the most celebrated images in American history.

Now commonly known as A Great Day in Harlem, the famous shot of 57 jazz musicians gathered outside a brownstone in New York is one of the most imitated images in popular culture, by one of the world’s greatest photographers. 

Art Kane: Harlem 1958 is a visual history of an iconic image including, for the first time, virtually every single frame from the historic shoot. With original text by Art Kane, forewords by Quincy Jones, the legendary Benny Golson, who appears in the photo, and an introduction by Kane's son, musician and photographer Jonathan Kane, the 168-page hardback volume is the story behind the shot.

57 jazz musicians, from the unknown to the world famous, duly assembled at the unlikely hour of 10am at 7 East 126th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues.  The group would include Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Thelonius Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie - whose hat was repeatedly stolen by local kids until Kane surrendered and put them in the shot, too.

Bailey’s Peru is an evocative collection of images taken whilst on location, first for Vogue in 1971 and then Tatler in 1984. A far cry from the demands of a contemporary shoot, with its mammoth crew and rigid itinerary, Bailey's Peru trips were pure adventure. Bailey, a couple of accomplices and a model. Exploring fashion and documentary in tandem Bailey immersed himself in the real Peru, and this wonderful series of photographs is the result, a celebration of a truly diverse talent.

With text by US Vogue Creative Director Grace Coddington who first accompanied Bailey to Peru in 1971, and journalist and filmmaker Jackie Higgins, Bailey’s Peru unites the photographer’s love of documentary, portraiture and fashion.

Shot in both colour and black and white, and including many unseen images, Bailey’s Peru captures and celebrates the undeniable beauty of the land and its people through the eyes of one of the greatest photographers of all time.

Photographer Hunter Barnes has an extraordinary ability to document aspects of culture and communities ignored by the mainstream and often misrepresented in the modern American narrative. In his latest work Barnes explores the Las Vegas that was.

Off the Strip, the new hardback book and accompanying exhibition, sees Barnes document old Vegas and the people who shaped the town in its heyday.

Known for developing strong relationships with his subjects and forging bonds with the people he photographs, Hunter Barnes spent January 2017 meeting the original characters of old Vegas. Their lives a vivid reminder of the past, Hunter’s subjects in Off the Strip are a living embodiment of the now-demolished landmarks they frequented and defined. Remaining sites like the old Cigar Lounge, where the real Las Vegas characters of the late 60s and early 70s still hang out, are as much a part of Barnes’s Las Vegas story as their devoted clientele.

HENI Publishing is thrilled to announce the first book by artist, pro skater and designer Blondey McCoy. ‘Us and Chem.’ is an immersive companion piece to McCoy’s acclaimed 2017 solo exhibition featuring his series of original artworks including his collaboration with Damien Hirst.   

‘Us and Chem.’ sees McCoy shining a much-needed spotlight on mental health awareness. A study in self-reflection and the psychological manifestations of chemical imbalance, created at a time when mental health issues are rising, McCoy’s distinctive and colourful collage style offers an unfiltered insight into his own mind and experiences.

Incorporating prescription boxes, cigarette stubs, wilted roses, with references to cultural and political figures such as Shane McGowan, the imagery is carefully collected, curated, photographed and printed on mirrors. A personal meditation on therapy and chemicals, popular culture and politics  ‘Us and Chem.’  confronts the country’s treatment of depression and anxiety in young people and a reliance on prescribed antidepressants.  

McCoy describes the works as: ‘A product of disaster. Anti-drugs and pro art… the fruits of a project fuelled by hyper productivity as a means of combatting depression, rather than burying it the easy way.’ 

Comprised of each of the thirteen works featured in the show reproduced on foiled paper, as well as a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the London exhibition, the new limited-edition monograph creates a dynamic and interactive experience. The book includes a work created in collaboration with Damien Hirst, entitled  Beautiful, Chemically Imbalanced Painting; an amalgamation of Hirst’s Spin Paintings and Blondey’s collage techniques. The book also features the poem “Us and Them” by Olly Todd inspired by the exhibition. Each book will be signed by Blondey McCoy and is presented in a custom-made prescription bag.

Blondey McCoy (b. 1997) is a British artist, skateboarder, clothing designer and model living in London. He is creative director of his own fashion brand Thames and is represented by the Kate Moss Agency. His work engages with popular culture as a means of communicating self, society and an interpretation and representation of modern-day religion. He has collaborated with brands such as Arena Homme+, Adidas, Palace, Burberry and Valentino, among others. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions around the world.  

SEASIDE SHELTERS is a wonderful collection of vibrant and detailed images of a bygone era, brought together in a beautiful new book and accompanying London exhibition.

Acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Will Scott has travelled throughout the UK to lovingly chronicle the definitive collection of these very British structures.  

Once a testament to the popularity of British summer holidays and the country’s inclement weather, many of these architectural gems now stand deserted, decorously preserved in time. Dedicated to documenting their faded grandeur and intricate designs, Scott travelled the length and breadth of Britain for the project, from iconic seaside resorts to lesser-known sites along the coast, including Blackpool, Margate, the Isle of Wight, Frinton-on-Sea, Southsea, Colwyn Bay, Weymouth and Exmouth.  

For so many these images evoke memories of childhood summers, when - not to be defeated by the undependable British weather - the seaside shelter meant that young and old could still enjoy the fresh air and fun of being on holiday even if that meant looking out to sea, eating ice cream or fish and chips and waiting impatiently for the sun to come out.

Scott’s captivating set of photographs features diverse styles of structure, colour and design from late Victorian, Art Deco to Bauhaus in all their faded glory. These iconic structures represent a small section of quintessentially British architecture and perfectly represent our love affair with the seaside holiday. The book includes an accompanying essay by Edwin Heathcote, architecture and design critic for the Financial Times.

Heathcote writes, “There is nothing, quite possibly, more British than the seaside shelter: the sense it embodies of a struggle against the elements; the loneliness of a small structure outlined against the vast horizon of the sea on a rainy day; the optimism of a day out at the seaside despite the weather; the municipal sense of a public good which is now mostly a memory. These small, intimate, curious works of micro-architecture are simultaneously reminders of a very particular world-view, nostalgia pods and wonderfully public places, perhaps the last architecture owned by us and open to all at any time of the day or the year.”

Against the Grain: Skate Culture and the Camera is an exhibition that celebrates the phenomena of skateboarding, with the photographers and filmmakers who documented the movement. Despite the subculture’s influence and resonance in almost every aspect of popular culture, this emblem of freedom and rebellion has been largely ignored as an artistic form.

Brought together for the first time, this historical review highlights behind the scene glimpses and cultural shifts associated with skateboarding throughout the past 50 years. Pioneering figures skating Southern California pools and schoolyard banks of the 1970’s are portrayed, as well as devious manipulations of urban architecture shaping new chapters of skateboarding’s evolution.

The exhibition includes never been seen photography from the archive of Oscar-winning director Spike Jonze, and Glen E. Friedman – the man who has been coined by Russell Simmons as defining the imagery of hip hop. Dobie Campbell, whose artist projects include installations at the prestigious Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, as part of Studio Sound: The Black Atlantic Project will be showing photographs from the London’s nascent skate scene in the early 1980s. Transworld Skateboard Magazine editor and former adidas skate team manager Skin Phillips will exhibit photography from Mark Gonzales’ provocative performance at the Stadtisches Museum, Köln, Germany.

If you are a producer, director, screenwriter or performer, you pray for a well-received and financially successful film. On June 12, 1968, prayers were answered. Rosemary’s Baby hit American theaters. This book is a definitive illustrated history commemorating the 50th anniversary of this landmark picture, from director and casting choices to the kudos and condemnation it received upon its release. Along the way, Polanski fell seriously behind schedule and was almost fired, Mia Farrow faced an ultimatum—career or marriage—from husband Frank Sinatra, and John Cassavetes nearly came to blows with his genius director. In addition to Munn’s comprehensive text, the book is a showcase for veteran special set photographer and movie still pioneer Bob Willoughby’s work, with many of his behind-the-scenes images presented here for the first time. His rare talent for capturing actors being themselves is an art form in its own right.

Extraordinarily rare photographs capturing the raw energy of the Beat Generation in a way never before seen before in print.

This amazing volume features a remarkable collection of largely unseen photographs of the Beat Generation by renowned Magnum photographer Burt Glinn. These photographs were recently discovered in Glinn’s archive where they had sat untouched for over 50 years. What makes this collection even more special is that over half the images are incolour. Glinn was celebrated for his extraordinary talent as a social documentary photographer and duringhis time with the Beats, his camera captured the spirit of the counterculture – writers, musicians and artists meeting in cafes, bars and partiesto pursue a truth and future the mainstream would not and could not acknowledge.

Rediscovered after 50 years and published here for the very first time, American Voyage is a captivating portrait of 1960s America from Italian photographer Mario Carnicelli.  

Featuring over 100 black-and-white and colour images, the collection takes in the people, fashion, colours and textures of sixties American street life, capturing the mood and undercurrent of a changing country.
In 1966, Mario Carnicelli won first place in a national Italian photography competition sponsored by Popular Photography magazine, Mamiya and Pentax. On submitting an image of a demonstration in his hometown of Pistoia, Tuscany, Carnicelli won a scholarship to photograph America. He travelled to the US during the 1960s, and this beautiful book and accompanying exhibition documents his trips across the United States and time spent in cities including Detroit, San Francisco, Buffalo, New York and Chicago.

Carefully curated with full access to the Jim Marshall Archive, this handsome oversized volume offers the definitive view of Johnny Cash’s prison concerts at Folsom in 1968 and San Quentin in 1969. Cash had been interested in recording a live album at a prison since his 1955 hit, “Folsom Prison Blues.” The idea was put on hold for a few years until 1968, when Cash visited one of California’s oldest maximum-security prisons to record his At Folsom Prison album. Cash had known Jim Marshall since the early 1960s and personally requested him to record the prison concert. Marshall was the only offcial photographer present, and was granted unlimited access. 

Backed by June Carter, Carl Perkins and the Tennessee Three, Cash performed two shows at Folsom. The resulting album was a hit in the United States, and reached Number One on the country charts and the top 15 of the national album chart. Its popularity revitalized Cash’s career and led to a follow up album, At San Quentin, the following year. Again, Marshall was personally invited to document the concert. San Quentin became Cash’s first album to hit Number One on the pop charts and both it and its predecessor remain two of the biggest selling live albums of all time. From arriving off the bus outside the imposing prison walls, to shaking hands with prisoners (including Glen Sherley, who wrote the song “Greystone Chapel” sung by Cash), and performing until sweat dripped down his forehead, Marshall captured the passion, authority and intimacy of Cash’s performances. His “JC Flippin’ the Bird at San Quentin Prison” has become one of the most iconic and most-copied photographs of the 20th century and came about when Marshall asked Cash to express what he thought about the prison authorities: “John, let’s do a shot for the warden.” 

Johnny Cash was one of Jim Marshall’s favorite subjects; something that is evident in his Folsom and San Quentin photographs. This body of work showcases some of the most arresting photographs of the country music star ever taken.

Danny Fields signed the Ramones within fifteen minutes of seeing them on stage at CBGB. “Arguably the most influential band of all time” according to NME, the Ramones inspired the punk movement in the US and the UK. A legendary manager, publicist, journalist and label exec Danny Fields managed the band from the ground up, accompanying them across Europe and America from their roots at CBGB to the now infamous new year’s eve show at the Rainbow in London.

MY RAMONES is Danny’s personal collection of over 250 photographs of the band on stage, with fans, partying, recovering and roaming the streets. Taken between 1975-1977 the images offer a rare insight into the lives of Joey, Dee Dee, Johnny and Tommy as they embark on their first tour and record their seminal first album The Ramones.

On New Year’s Day 1818, Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein was first published in an anonymous three-volume edition of 500 copies. Some thought the book was too radical in implication. A few found the central theme intriguing . . . no-one predicted its success.

The winning projects will be shown in a digital exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery in London later this year and exhibited at photography festivals worldwide. Michael’s images are some of the best rock & roll photographs of their kind. 'It was an era that spawned not only an iconic look, but a lot of good looking icons. The re-imagining of photographer John d Green's book. Birds of Britain highlights some of the 1960s' most famous females' - Square Mile

In the spring of 1966, a British photographer embarked on a project to photograph the most beautiful women in the country. Birds of Britain, the seminal photographic book by John d Green celebrating the brilliant and beautiful women of the UK, was published the in 1967. Featuring models, society girls, singers, actresses and debutantes, Birds of Britain was a celebration of Swinging London’s movers and shakers and went on to become an immediate mainstream success selling 60,000 copies, 20 times the original print run. A US tour for John d Green and a selection of the ‘birds’ followed, with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and even a single and the book went onto develop a cult following.

Some of the images in this unexpected and exciting collection caused controversy when originally published due to their quirky and outrageous style. They are, as Green says, "a truly British phenomena, the most fabulous "birds" who put Swinging London on the map." This was a glorious explosion of everything Sixties London represented to the rest of the world and Green captured its very essence in these stunning, often bizarre and beautiful images.

In the late 1970s, The Village Voice sent photographer Bill Bernstein on an assignment to New York nightclub Studio54. The occasion was an awards presentation dinner for the President’s mother, Lillian Carter, but as it drew to a close the regulars soon rolled in. Bernstein quickly bought ten rolls of film from another photographer and stayed for the night.

Disco: The Bill Bernstein Photographs takes the viewer on an access-all-areas tour of late-70s New York nightlife. Bernstein witnessed first hand the last days of the disco scene in New York, he photographed the regulars at Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Mudd Club, Hurrah and GG's Barnum Room. Headlines may have been dominated by images of Bianca Jagger and Andy Warhol but Bernstein also captured the real faces of disco, the authentic, egalitarian crowd who lived and breathed the scene. "Burt Glinn's defining photos of revolution sat unpublished for nearly 60 years" - LA Times

On New Year’s Eve 1958, young Magnum photographer Burt Glinn was celebrating at a black tie party in New York. All the talk that evening was of corrupt Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, rumoured to be ready to flee for his life from Havana and said to have already backed his army trucks up to the treasury.

Glinn borrowed $400 from Magnum president Cornell Capa, grabbed his camera gear, raced to La Guardia just in time to make the last flight to Miami. He arrived just after dawn in Havana, Batista had fled, Fidel was still hundreds of miles away, nobody knew where, Che Guevara was on his way to Havana and nobody seemed to be in charge. As Glinn said “you just can't hail a taxi and ask the cabbie to take you to the revolution”.

Entitled ‘The Conditions of Winter’, the works are based on found photographs depicting scenes of Russian military life in harsh winter settings. While Voligamsi retains the monochrome colours and square format of early photography, the content of each image is given a characteristically uncanny, surreal twist – an alteration that is sometimes comical, often darkly beautiful, always oddly unsettling.
